A MILLION YOUNG PEOPLE NOW UNEMPLOYED UNDER THE TORIES

With over a million young people now out of work, Labour has launched a clear plan to create and support new jobs for the next generation.

The Tories’ economic policies have resulted in over 1 million young people now being unemployed. In Lewes the number of young people claiming Job Seekers Allowance has increased by 46 %.

The Tory-led Government inherited an economy in which unemployment was coming down but because of their decisions to cut too far too fast – including scrapping Labour’s successful Future Jobs Fund which created over 100,000 jobs for young people – unemployment is now rising again, with youth unemployment at a 19 year high.

In response, Labour has set out a clear five-point plan to create jobs and help the next generation. This plan includes:

1. A £2 billion tax on bank bonuses to fund 100,000 jobs for young people – which they would be required to take-up – and build 25,000 more affordable homes.

2. Bring forward long-term investment projects in schools, roads and transport to get people back to work and to strengthen our economy for the future.

3. Temporarily reverse January’s damaging VAT rise – an extra £450 for a couple with children would provide a boost for our high streets and help struggling families.

4. A one-year cut in VAT to 5% on home improvements, repairs and maintenance to help homeowners and small businesses.

5. A one-year national insurance tax break for every small firm which takes on extra workers would help small businesses to grow and create jobs.

Linda Drabble, Chair of Lewes Labour said: “It’s terrible news that so many young people are now unemployed and unable to find work. David Cameron’s Government have been given a million reasons to change course on the economy – and they need to do so before it’s too late.

“There is a better way. Labour’s five-point plan for growth will get our economy moving again, help get the deficit down in a steadier and more balanced way and create thousands of jobs for the next generation.”

Many of our members and supporters have young children, and this government’s austerity measures are hurting families like us. Food, heating and other bills just keep going up and up – making ends meet each month is hard enough, without worrying about our jobs as well.

Even more of us are worried about our young people – so many are coming out of school or college and can’t get a job. What sort of future will they have?

Cameron and Osborne are taking a reckless gamble with our economy, and with people’s lives – and the gamble’s not paying off. Their austerity measures are not only cutting the services we rely on, and the pensions that give us dignity in retirement – they’re also responsible for putting so many people out of work.

The Tories like to talk tough about paying down the deficit, but by putting tens of thousands of people on the dole – claiming benefits instead of paying taxes – their sums simply don’t add up. They’re making it harder to get the deficit down, and are set to borrow billions more than they planned.

We have supported this tax for a long while, our candidate at the general election put his weight behind it, and it became an issue again at the G20 summit.

Over the course of the G20, a group of G20 countries from France to Brazil backed the Robin Hood Tax, under pressure from trade unions, development NGOs and climate change campaigners.

The link between the Robin Hood Tax and fighting poverty and climate change at home and abroad became clearer than ever. Momentum is building and leaders like David Cameron who opposed the tax have been left looking increasingly isolated.

This happened because millions of people like you, in campaign groups across the world, forced the Robin Hood Tax to the top of the political agenda, and sent their leaders to the G20, aware of the levels of concern at home.

But it doesn’t end here. Far from it. David Cameron remains one of the key blockers in the international process, so it’s vital we keep up the pressure on the UK government ahead of EU talks this week and UN climate talks in South Africa in December.

Trade unions around the world – from the USA to South Africa – are pushing their governments to support the Robin Hood Tax. Here in the UK, as the economy fails to pick up and cuts to public services continue to hit ordinary people, we need to keep the pressure on Cameron – the Robin Hood Tax is a key part of Plan B.

We are now part of a movement of millions. From church services in St. Paul’s to nurses on Wall Street, people everywhere are saying enough is enough. A Robin Hood Tax remains the best option on the table to start making the financial sector work for people, not just for profit.

Ideas this good don’t come along every day. And when they do, they’re too powerful to ignore.
