Steve Watts

Steve has lived in Lewes for more than 20 years. His son attended Wallands and Priory Schools. Steve was educated at Ruskin College, Oxford, and Sussex University. He presently works for a Lewes Business

He has been involved in many volunteer organisations around the town, including the Neville Residents’ Association, The Rooks Supporters’ Trust and is currently chairman of the Southover Bonfire Society.

Steve was, last year, awarded for his bravery by the chief superintendent of the Sussex Police Force for his part in thwarting the robbery of W. E .Carks, the jewellers, on Cliffe High Street. He was also voted Lewes’ ‘Personality of the Year’ in 2006.

The opposition parties often talk about local elections being a two horse race, but people don’t vote for horses, they vote for people. So if you would prefer to vote for a person and  you want someone with a strong voice on local issues and  the courage to tackle the things that are wrong, whether in the street or in the County Council vote for Steve Watts on June 4th 2009

As an aspiring MP for my constituency, I would like you to be aware of the importance many constituents attach to the issues of Global Poverty and Climate Change and to use your current position within the Labour Party in this context.

As I hope you are aware, Saturday 17 October is World Day for the Eradication of Poverty and on the weekend of 16-18 October 2009, millions of people worldwide will stand up and take action against poverty. More than 116 million people took action at this time last year.

This period ends just 20 days before the G20 Finance Ministers’ meeting in Scotland and 50 days before the global climate talks in Copenhagen. These meetings will be critical to achieving a just world economy.

16-18 October 2009 will also fall in the run up to a UK General Election, after which many MPs will be new.

Because of the global crisis, and because of the nearing election, decision makers are increasingly receptive to demands for action on poverty and climate change.

Now it is time for a nationwide push to make trade injustice, climate change, insufficient aid and unfinished debt cancellation, things of the past.

I hope you will take an active role in this endeavour.
