By their own admission, Lewes Lib Dems have miserably failed to build enough social housing to meet either Central Government or their own targets. The Governments target is that 25% of all homes built in the area should be for social rent, but Lewes DC have delivered just over 8% for either social renting or shared ownership.
Labour Campaigner Steve Watts says with development schemes in the pipeline all over the town and district, their failure to secure enough affordable housing is now a major cause for concern. Can the Lib Dems to be trusted to stick up for and represent local people in their negotiations with developers ? It appears that they are desperate to see flashy new developments so they will accept whatever they are offered.
Their own surveys have identified a strong demand for social rented housing in Lewes Town, but the small number of rented homes that have been built are outside of the town. Key local developments such as Baxters and Lewes House have been allowed to deliver no social rented housing at all.
The Labour Government wants more affordable housing and is committed to drastically increasing the amount of affordable housing for rent and sale and has identified millions of pounds of investment to achieve its ambitious targets.
Steve Watts says, the timid and ineffective approach of our Lib Dem Council leads local families to be badly let down.

Thanks for your comment, but LDC has it would seem reacted to a persistent campaign from Lewes Labour to provide more social housing. The Lewes House site, has never been the most popular development in Lewes and will become social housing only because, no one is likely to buy. It was not previously planned as social housing. It is of course, the Labour Government that is encouraging this kind of development to stimulate the economy and provide the social housing that areas like Lewes so badly need. Like the free swimming initiative – funded and proposed by central Government – that the local council like to propose as their own. The LDC like to promote others initiatives as their own, mainly because they have no initiative.

They’ve exceeded it by 30%. The Lewes House site is set to deliver ONLY affordable housing if the developers can’t get the finance for the rest. This is pretty desperate stuff. I came to look at your website to see if I should consider voting Labour here, but your unsubstantiated attacks have completely put me off.
