Labour calls Lewes Council to account

lewesDespite what you may have read, Lewes is not twinned with Iceland. Mums may shop there, but all the financial advice, for some time, has been don’t invest there.  Our neighbours Brighton Council heeded this advice over a year ago.  Lewes Liberals ignored it.

The Liberal Democrats in Lewes District Council have lost a million pounds of your money and if by any chance we get it back it will be down to our Labour government. So what, you may ask, were the council opposition doing all this time? The opposition Tories and the Independent who could have called the ruling Liberals to account, did absolutely nothing.  Spencer says the time has come to get the common sense everyday things right, but like many people he talks to we are, instead, inundated with leaflets announcing fanciful schemes, or the non achievements of some grey, faceless, indecisive and inept Liberal councillor. Even our MP, Mr Baker, who has previously rooted out others mistakes, is SILENT.  Does he speak for the interests of Lewes or the interests of the Liberals?

Along with questions of the LDC,  Jonathan Spencer also seeks the whereabouts of the invisible Lewes Town Council. Instead of plastic bag policy, opposition Greens and Independents could be asking hard questions of the Liberals. No doubt the Liberals tell them they don’t do politics in the Town Council, is this why the Lib Dems make their policy up as they go and the rest just follow along.

These are worrying times, and Labour Campaigners Steve Watts & Jonathan Spencer are concerned by the downturn in the economy, the run on the banks and the outlook for mortgages and housing and its effect on Lewes.  Gordon Brown has shown that Labour lead the way in the UK and globally with answers to these problems.  Locally we want to see our Councils: whether Liberal controlled District or Tory Controlled County introducing common sense policy that supports Lewes people, Lewes business, and creates a town where sustainable development brings about prosperity for all.

Who are Steve Watts and Jonathan Spencer? Where have they come from? Are they Sussex people? Why are they averse to possessive apostrophes? Where did they go to school? What qualifications do they have to be councillors, whether for town, district or county? Do they have business experience? What makes them think Labour has any chance in Lewes?

There are articles on this website about local campaigners and candidates. Lewes needs some positive change, we may not expect great things of Labour in Lewes, but we do expect those in powerful positions locally to be answerable and to act and to work for Lewes. This is not just true for those who run the councils but also those who are elcted in opposition. I can think of one councillor of great integrity, for whom this is true, but across the Town and District I can think of very few others.
